Particulate Emission from Internal Combustion Engines

چکیده
In this work, number concentration and size distribution at the exhaust of a Port Fuel Injection (PFI) Spark Ignition (SI) engine downstream a three-way catalyst and a Direct Injection Common Rail Diesel engine have been measured with two particle size instruments. The gas exhaust is first diluted, a nano DMA is used to obtain the particles size distribution function in the 3-60 nm range, in parallel, an electrical low pressure impactor (ELPI) is used to investigate a wider size range of 7 nm up to 10 μm. The two sizing techniques furnishes complementary information, in particular, DMA resolution is necessary to obtain the true distribution of the smaller particles. The measurements show that the Spark Ignition engine emit a large number of particles in all the investigated conditions. The maximum of the particles size distribution is measured at about 4nm. At the exhausts of a Diesel engine small particles are less abundant and difficult to detect.

Effect of Start of Injection on the Particulate Emission from Methanol Fuelled HCCI Engine
New combustion concepts developed in internal combustion engines such as homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) have attracted serious attention due to the possibilities to simultaneously achieve higher efficiency and lower emissions, which will impact the environment positively. The HCCI combustion concept has potential of ultra-low NOX and particulate matter (PM) emission in compariso...
متن کاملRole of lubrication oil in particulate emissions from a hydrogen-powered internal combustion engine.
Recent studies suggest that trace metals emitted by internal combustion engines are derived mainly from combustion of lubrication oil. This hypothesis was examined by investigation of the formation of particulate matter emitted from an internal combustion engine in the absence of fuel-derived soot. Emissions from a modified CAT 3304 diesel engine fueled with hydrogen gas were characterized. The...

متن کاملParticulate Morphology and Toxicity of an Alcohol Fuelled HCCI Engine
Homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engines are attracting attention as next-generation internal combustion engines mainly because of very low NOx and PM emission potential and excellent thermal efficiency. Particulate emissions from HCCI engines have been usually considered negligible however recent studies suggest that PM number emissions from HCCI engines cannot be neglected. This...
متن کاملPrediction of Major Pollutants Emission in Direct-Injection Dual-Fuel Diesel And Natural-Gas Engines
The dual-fuel diesel engine (D.F.D.E) is a conventional diesel engine in which much of the energy released, hence power, comes from the combustion of gaseous fuel such as natural gas. The exhaust emission characteristics of the D.F.D.E needs further refinements, particularly in terms of reduction of Unburnt Hydrocarbons (U7HC) and Carbon Monoxide (CO) emission, because the concentration of thes...
